Testing Requirements

General Knowledge Test

The Florida Teacher Certification Exam (FTCE) General Knowledge Test (GKT) is an examination of basic skills required of an individual wishing to pursue a degree in education. Successful completion of this examination is a requirement of admission into the USF College of Education.

The FTCE GKT Subtests

  • Essay (1 essay/50 minutes)
  • English Language Skills (40 questions/40 minutes)
  • Reading (40 questions/55 minutes)
  • Mathematics (45 questions/100 minutes)

Cost

First attempt: $130 for any combination of subtests
Retake: $150 for any combination of subtests

Passing Score

  • Essay- 8 out of 12 points
  • English Language Skills- 70%
  • Reading- 75%
  • Mathematics- 72%

Prepare

Elementary Education K-6 Subject Area Exam

The Elementary Education K–6 test covers content and content pedagogy.

The FTCE Elementary Education K-6 Subtests

  • Subtest 1: Language Arts and Reading (60 questions/65 minutes)
  • Subtest 2: Social Science (55 questions/65 minutes)
  • Subtest 3: Science (55 questions/70 minutes)
  • Subtest 4: Mathematics (50 questions/70 minutes)

Cost

First attempt: $200
Retake: $150 (single subtest); $200 (two subtests); $220 (three or more subtests)

Passing Score

  • A scaled score of at least 200 per subtest
  • A passing score on all 4 subtests
